My interview on CCTV (China) about how NAFTA may change post Trump

by Diane Francis

This is my interview with CCTV America as to how NAFTA will be changed, what industries will be disrupted, what Trump will want, how this will affect Canada and Mexico as well.

NAFTA is really a combination of two bilateral trade deals — US-Canada in 1988 and US-Mexico then Canada in 1994 — that can be canceled with six months’ notice.

Trump wants to renegotiate, as a protectionist, to bring back auto jobs from Mexico that have gone there to tap into cheaper labor rates. But this is a tricky matter given that US and Canadian manufacturers and auto sector players embraced the NAFTA architecture.

This is like unscrambling an egg and will take time, compromises and the assent of America’s corporations frankly.
