Aljazeera America: Diane on Putin
this is the interview I did on August 1 on Real Money with Ali Velshi. Few commentators view Putin’s behaviour and strategy as a business model. They buy into the rhetoric and narratives about the situation in Ukraine and elsewhere.
Russia is propped up by energy prices and does little else in economic terms. Putin’s Plan is to retain his natural gas monopoly in Europe and pipeline monopoly by disciplining customers and suppliers and keeping out competitors.
Some 70% of Moscow’s revenues are from its energy sector, a fact that has led one wag to comment that “Russia is a gas station posing as a country”.
